Housing corporation Charlotte van Beuningen commissioned Arens to make a painting for the hallway of one of their buildings. For the corporation it was very important that the tenants liked and approved the painting. In an early stage sketches were presented to the tenants and their suggestions were taken along in the process of painting this piece.

The theme of the painting is ageing. Most tenants in this building are elderly, but that doesn’t mean they are old and done. The main text on the painting is (translated from Dutch): In a recent past I was today’s youth.
